Verne Harnish: What it really takes to scale a business

Verne Harnish, Founder and CEO of Scaling Up, has spent four decades helping entrepreneurs turn ambition into momentum. But for him, scaling isn’t about size – it’s about mindset.

When Verne Harnish founded the Entrepreneurs’ Organization four decades ago, his mission was simple: help entrepreneurs stay independent, but never alone. Today, as Founder and CEO of Scaling Up and a global advisor to growth-stage companies, he’s still challenging leaders to think bigger and smarter.

From inflation-driven price pressures to the rise of AI-powered teams, Harnish believes the companies that will thrive are those led by ‘learn-it-alls’ rather than ‘know-it-alls’. On CEO: Behind the Scenes, he unpacks the real work of scaling – mastering cash flow, designing smarter compensation, naming strategy and protecting what he calls the soul of the business.

For Harnish, scaling begins with curiosity.

“Leaders are learners,” he says, emphasizing that growth-minded founders must stay open to new ideas, whether from books, mentors or emerging technologies.

That hunger to learn, Harnish believes, separates companies that keep evolving from those that plateau, but inflation has quietly rewritten the rules of scaling.

“We’re really finding that companies, even though they’ve been growing fast, are growing broke again,” he explains.

The solution lies in two areas most leaders overlook: pricing and compensation. Rather than competing on cost, he urges companies to test and refine pricing constantly while rewarding performance, not position.

“You’re going to have less people paid a lot more instead of more people paid less,” he reasons.

And in the age of AI, the future belongs to lean teams of A-players empowered by technology.

Attracting business

Harnish’s simplest test of great strategy is whether demand comes to you.

“Are the customers calling you? Or are you having to chase the customers?” he asks.

According to Harnish, that pull means your value is clear and your strategy is working. And inside the organization, that clarity should extend to pay and progression.

“The key is providing horizontal promotions instead of vertical promotions,” he explains, emphasizing a structure that lets talent grow without having to manage others.

“Leaders are learners.”

Once the structure is built, the scaling can begin, but Harnish notes that cash flow is essential to expanding.

“You can get by with decent people, decent strategy and decent execution, but not a day without cash,” he warns. Once that base is solid, it’s time to repeat what works, thus creating systems that make excellence consistent.

Yet even the best systems can’t replace purpose.

“You can outsource and delegate everything but the soul of the business,” he says.

Founders, he adds, must guard that essence until they find others who can carry it forward with equal passion.
