A sleek silver bullet putting the driver in the midst of the action has become the fastest McLaren road car in history, and it has already sold out.

Only 106 McLaren Speedtails will be manufactured, making it a rare and highly sought-after hypercar that boasts purity of form and extraordinary velocity.

Rocketing from 0-300 kilometres in 12.8 seconds with the capacity to reach 403km/h, the Speedtail is aerodynamically optimised by its teardrop-shaped cockpit and dramatically elongated carbon fibre body.

“It’s a fusion of art and science that combines an astonishing maximum speed with an iconic central-driving position and a truly pioneering approach to bespoke personalisation.” – Mike Flewitt

The notable absence of door mirrors empowers the road car, reducing turbulence and eliminating drag from buffered air. The retractable, high-definition rear-view cameras glide out of the car when it’s in ignition and provide a wider field of vision for the driver than traditional mirrors.

The futuristic Hyper-GT Speedtail is like nothing the company has ever built before. At the touch of a button, advanced electrochromic technology darkens the top of the windscreen glass to remove the need for sun visors while the key controls, gear selection and switches sit on the ceiling above the driver’s head.

With double-skinned, power-operated dihedral doors and a bespoke Monocage chassis, McLaren Automotive Chief Executive Officer Mike Flewitt says the hypercar is the vehicle of the future.

“It’s a fusion of art and science that combines an astonishing maximum speed with an iconic central-driving position and a truly pioneering approach to bespoke personalisation,” Flewitt says. “A ground-breaking hybrid powertrain sits within a lightweight carbon fibre body reminiscent of sleek ‘streamliners’ that once set world speed records, while the luxurious three-seat cockpit offers a sublime combination of an incredible driving experience, unmatched individualism and innovative materials never seen before in a road-going vehicle.”

Being behind the wheel of the three-seater speedster, which is not road legal in the US, promises a thrilling experience made even more exciting by the active ailerons in the tail – a feature usually only found in aviation.

Harmonising sleek and seamless beauty with pioneering technology, the petrol-electric hybrid powertrain can be lowered by 35mm to achieve maximum speed (with the highest point of the vehicle just 1,120mm from the road).

Inspired by the fastest shape in nature, the teardrop, manufacturers rethought every aspect of design to create a drastically lighter and aerodynamic road car.

The seamless silhouette of the Speedtail (which costs £1.75 million plus tax) has been designed for aero-drag efficiency. Every line and curve plays a role in bringing to life the McLaren of the future.
