Glitz and glam: The best luxe fashion looks of the 2018 Melbourne Cup

Vibrant designer frocks brightened the miserable Melbourne weather as thousands gathered for the race that stops the nation.

Loud bursts of colour, statement clutches and show-stopping stilettos injected life into the dreary spring day of the 2018 Melbourne Cup.

Dolce & Gabbana headpieces sprinkled with chunky jewels, elegant floral headbands dripping in gems, oversized sunhats and large bows were popular headwear choices, leaving little room for traditional fascinators.

Vibrant pantsuits in warm tones and blazer dresses were out in numbers, perhaps a strategic fashion choice given the torrential rain, while others braved the weather in traditional floral frocks of varying hem lengths.

Racing royalty Kate Waterhouse stunned in an emerald floral Miu Miu dress with a long hemline, striking Salvatore Ferragamo mule wedges boasting gold heels, a pink Bvlgari Serpenti bag and a Nerida Winter bow. The contemporary look was made complete with divine jewels from Chaumet including Hortensia malachite earrings.

Australian model Lara Worthington dared to bare in a crisp white Chloé dress paired with an ink-black belt, green velvet ankle boots and an unusual choice of race day headwear – a black beret.

From model Megan Gale donning a metallic, star-studded Paolo Sebastian gown and delicate gold Stephanie Spencer Millinery headpiece to Australian actress Nathalie Kelley showcasing an adorable Alex Perry monochrome dress, dainty Bvlgari jewels and rouge Sophia Webster heels, nothing was off limits for high-end fashion on the field.

Here is the best of the luxe looks from the 2018 Melbourne Cup at Flemington Racecourse.
